A morphometric study of adult human atlas vertebrae in South Gujarat population, India

چکیده
The anatomy of the atlas (first cervical vertebrae, C1) exhibits complex, threedimensional structures, showing extensive variability in morphology from other cervical vertebrae. 1 It is located at critical point close to the vital centers of the medulla oblongata which can get compressed by a dislocation of the atlanto axial complex or instability of the atlanto axial joint. 2 The atlas holds the globe of the skull and is devoid of body and spine. It has two lateral masses links by an anterior and posterior arch. Each lateral mass has superior and inferior articular facets. 1

متن کاملFunctional morphology of the first cervical vertebra in humans and nonhuman primates.
The cervical vertebral column bears or balances the weight of the head supported by the nuchal muscles that partly originate from the cervical vertebrae. The position of the head relative to the vertebral column, and consequently locomotion and posture behavior, could thus be associated with the form of the cervical vertebrae. In spite of this assumption and some empirical indications along the...

Background: Leishmaniasis is a major public health problem causing significant morbidity and mortality in Africa, Asia and Latin America. It presents mainly in three clinical forms, of which visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is the most severe form. Recent outbreaks of VL in India and the epidemic of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) make VL a re-emerging problem in India1. Outbreaks and epidemics o...
متن کاملMorphometric Study of the Atlas Vertebra using Manual Method.
ABSTRACT The atlas (first cervical vertebra) has undergone many structural modifications. It is critically located and close to the 'life centres'. For this study, one hundred dried intact human atlas vertebrae from the Indian population were measured using a digital Vernier calliper that provides accurate resolution up to 0.01 mm. The distance between the tips of the transverse process, the ou...
متن کاملGeometry of the articular facets of the lateral atlanto-axial joints in the case of occipitalization.
This study investigates if atlanto-occipital fusion affects the size and geometrical configuration of the articular facets of the atlanto-axial joint. Morphometric analysis was performed on the male adult skull, the occipital bone of which is assimilated with the first cervical vertebrae (the atlas). The perimeter, Feret's diameter, surface area, and circularity of the inferior articular fa-cet...
